Replace an RTC Battery in a 6910P Laptop

The Real-Time Clock Apple Laptop Batteries in your Compaq laptop powers not only the computer's internal clock but the section of nonvolatile memory that contains important system settings. If this battery becomes damaged or simply begins to wear out, you may experience problems with your laptop's boot settings. The battery can be replaced, though you will have to remove the keyboard from your laptop to access it.

Instructions
1
Turn off your laptop. Ensure it is not plugged into a power source.

2
Turn the laptop over. Locate the main laptop battery. It's the long, thin component along the top edge. Slide the battery release latch (located just below the left half of the battery) to the "release" position. Slide and hold the Hitachi Laptop Battery locking latch (located next to the bottom right corner of the battery) to the "unlocked" position. Slide the battery out of its slot and set it aside.

3
Remove the three Phillips screws securing the keyboard to the base of the laptop. These are arranged in a large triangle around the laptop's surface.

4
Turn your laptop right side up. Open the top all the way with the laptop flat.

5
Slide the four plastic tabs along the keyboard's top edge to unlock the keyboard from the cover. Use the flathead screwdriver for this process, if necessary.

6
Use the flathead screwdriver to gently lift the keyboard's top edge and remove the keyboard from the base. Place it upside down on the top part of the laptop.

7
Locate the locking bars that prevent you from disconnecting the cables attached to the keyboard. Flip them up gently before disconnecting the keyboard entirely.

8
Locate the RTC battery. It's a circular blue battery, located just below the top edge of the (now-removed) keyboard.

9
Disconnect the battery's red-and-white cable from the system board into which it is plugged. Free the cable from the tabs it's tucked under.

10
Use the flathead screwdriver to gently pry the battery out of its socket. As you remove it, guide its cable carefully through the opening on the side of the socket. Dispose of the battery.

11
Remove the paper backing from the replacement HP Laptop Batteries. Guide its attached cable through the opening on the side of the battery socket. Route it through the plastic tabs, connect it to the system board, and press the battery into the socket.

12
Replace the keyboard. Reconnect the two cables, press the locking bars down, insert the keyboard from its bottom edge first and slide the four plastic tabs at the top of the keyboard to lock it in. Replace the three Phillips screws on the underside of the laptop.

13
Replace the laptop battery. Slide it into the battery bay until the latch clicks.
